Building Practical Independence One Project at a Time
The Refuge is the real-world testing ground behind Practically Offgrid.
It is not a finished homestead.
It is not a showcase property.
It is a work in progress built around a simple idea:
Learn. Build. Improve. Repeat.
The goal is to take a piece of rural land, an aging RV, salvaged materials, and practical skills and slowly turn them into something useful.
Current Phase: Building Base Camp
The first stage is not about comfort.
It is about creating the foundation:
- dependable shelter
- secure storage
- reliable power
- water systems
- food production
- tools and repair capability
Every improvement should make the next visit easier than the last.
Shelter
The first shelter at The Refuge is an older stationary RV.
Instead of restoring it back into a traveling camper, the focus is turning it into a durable small living space.
The question changed from:
“How do I fix this RV?”
to:
“How do I make this a better refuge?”
Power
Power starts simple and grows over time.
Current goals:
- generator backup
- solar charging
- battery storage
- efficient systems
The best system is one that works today and can improve tomorrow.
Water
A reliable water system is one of the biggest steps toward independence.
The plan includes:
- collecting water
- storing water safely
- filtering drinking water
- reducing waste
Food
Food resilience starts small.
Not acres of crops overnight.
Just practical steps:
- better storage
- less waste
- container gardening
- raised beds
- preserving skills
The Rule
Every trip should leave The Refuge better than it was found.
Sometimes that means building something new.
Sometimes it means fixing a problem.
Sometimes it means learning what does not work.
Progress is the project.
